Woolworths’ New ‘Scan and Go’ Trolleys: Shoppers Divided

A New Way to Shop, but Is It Easier?

Woolworths is trialing new “Scan and Go” trolleys in several Sydney stores, aiming to speed up the shopping process. These trolleys, equipped with an interactive screen and scanner, allow shoppers to scan items as they pick them, avoiding long checkout lines.

However, early feedback suggests mixed reactions from customers.

Mixed Reviews from Shoppers

Some shoppers, like Jenny from Windsor, found the new system cumbersome, especially when dealing with fresh produce. Unlike traditional registers, these trolleys require customers to weigh and scan fruits and vegetables within the produce section, which caused confusion.

Jenny noted it took longer than expected due to the extra steps involved in the process.

Conversely, some customers appreciated the innovation. A young woman mentioned the system was “just so easy to do,” while others were open to trying it for quicker shopping.

Expert Opinion and Future Plans

Food retail expert Gary Mortimer believes the technology is about offering more choices to shoppers, allowing them to select between staffed registers, self-service, or the new “Scan and Go” option.

Following Woolworths’ lead, Coles is also planning to introduce a similar system soon.
