Police Detain Woman with $144,900 in Cash at Cairns Airport
A 41-year-old Cairns woman faces charges after authorities found $144,900 in cash taped under her dress during a security check at Cairns Airport on September 15. The woman was detained by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) after airport security reported the discovery. She was allegedly preparing to fly to Sydney with bundles of cash, containing 2598 $50 notes and 150 $100 notes.
She has been charged under Queensland’s Criminal Proceeds Confiscation Act 2002 for possessing suspected illicit funds, which could result in up to two years of imprisonment or a $16,130 fine. AFP Detective Superintendent Melissa Northam highlighted that large amounts of unexplained cash can indicate criminal activity, adding that the AFP collaborates closely with airport staff nationwide to address potential criminal conduct.
