Chris Field Cancels Italy Trip After CCC Probe
Western Australia’s Ombudsman, Chris Field, has canceled his planned attendance at an international ombudsman conference in Italy after controversy arose regarding his official capacity. This comes amid a Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) investigation into his extensive travel during his tenure.
Mr. Field, who has led the WA Ombudsman’s Office for over 17 years, was also serving as the president of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) for three years, a period marked by multiple international trips.
Mr. Field had promoted his appearance at the Italy conference but later withdrew, stating his intention was to fund the trip personally without using taxpayer money. The WA Premier, Roger Cook, contradicted Mr. Field’s earlier statement, clarifying he would not attend in an official capacity.
The CCC is investigating whether Mr. Field used his position for personal gain, focusing on his travel expenses and the overlap between his roles.
The probe remains ongoing, and Mr. Field is on extended leave until its conclusion, indicating he may resign depending on the outcome to protect his mental health and the integrity of the Ombudsman’s Office.
