Victorian Man Sentenced for Deceptive Exit Trafficking of Former Wife

Exit Trafficking Offender Sentenced in Melbourne Court

A 52-year-old Victorian man has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison for exit trafficking, marking the first conviction for this crime in Victoria. The Meadow Heights man deceived his former wife, a Sudanese national, into leaving Australia for Sudan in 2014 under the pretense of a family holiday. Once overseas, he took her identification documents, returned to Australia with their two children, and attempted to revoke her visa, leaving her stranded and unable to return.

The victim, who was living in Australia on a partner visa, ultimately made it back to Australia in early 2016 with the help of Victoria Legal Aid. She later filed a complaint with the Australian Federal Police (AFP), initiating an investigation that led to a search of the man’s home and workplace. After a lengthy legal process, he was found guilty in April 2024.

The sentencing judge highlighted the planning and abuse of power involved, describing the man’s actions as a severe misuse of trust. AFP Detective Superintendent Bernard Geason commended the victim for her bravery in coming forward and called for public awareness on the signs of human trafficking. He emphasized that exit trafficking is a hidden crime that targets vulnerable individuals, and the AFP remains committed to supporting victims and investigating these cases.

Human trafficking indicators are available on the AFP website, and the public is encouraged to report any suspicions, which could potentially save lives.
