Environmental Concerns Grow After Shipwreck Near Samoa

Scientists are urging New Zealand to act quickly to prevent environmental damage in Samoa after the sinking of a naval ship. Coastal science expert Professor Chris Bisil highlights the risk of fuel oil leaks harming marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs.

Although the lighter diesel oil used on the ship may evaporate faster, there are still concerns about oil slicks reaching shorelines and coral reefs during low tides. Cleanup efforts are underway to minimize damage, but the potential harm to marine life remains a serious issue.
