New Government Caps Could Impact Thousands of Students
Australia’s major universities face uncertainty after offering places to international students under new federal government caps on visas. Education Minister Jason Clare announced that starting in 2025, no more than 145,000 international students will be allowed to start at Australian universities each year.
This decision has left at least 11 institutions potentially needing to retract their offers to students.

The Group of Eight, representing Australia’s top universities, estimated that their members might need to cut around 22,000 international students.
Universities like the University of Melbourne and Australian National University (ANU) are still calculating their individual caps and are unsure if they will need to rescind any offers.
However, some smaller universities, such as La Trobe University and the University of Southern Queensland, have expressed confidence that they will not need to cancel any offers.
The proposed caps aim to create a fairer system for all universities, especially smaller ones that may benefit from the changes. While larger institutions have opposed these caps, smaller universities see them as an opportunity to increase international enrolments and promote equitable growth across the sector.
