UN Secretary-General Urges Major Polluters to Lead in Climate Action

Pacific Nations at the Brink of Climate Catastrophe

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on major polluters and developed nations, including Australia, to take urgent action to reduce emissions and phase out coal and gas.

Speaking at the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in Tonga, Guterres highlighted the severe impact of climate change on Pacific nations, which are facing rapidly rising sea levels and temperatures.

He stressed that the world must limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius to avoid irreversible damage, such as the collapse of ice sheets in Greenland and West Antarctica.

Guterres emphasized that G20 nations, like Australia, have the greatest responsibility to lead the way in cutting emissions and increasing climate finance to support vulnerable countries.

He also noted the sharp rise in climate-related events in the Pacific, which have already caused significant loss of life and impacted millions.

As Australia faces growing pressure over its fossil fuel industries, Pacific leaders continue to advocate for greater climate action and financial support to help their nations cope with the escalating impacts of climate change.
