Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow early Wednesday, with at least 11 drones targeting the Russian capital. Russian air defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed all the drones, preventing any casualties or damage.
The attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing war, which began in February 2022, and highlights Ukraine’s increasing use of drones to strike deep into Russian territory.
The conflict, primarily a grueling battle across eastern Ukraine, has seen a shift in recent months with Ukraine targeting critical infrastructure, such as refineries and airfields, within Russia.
While drone attacks on Moscow have been rare, this latest strike follows an earlier attack in May 2023, demonstrating Ukraine’s growing capability to reach the heart of Russia.
Despite the attack, life in Moscow remained largely unaffected, with cafes and shops bustling as usual. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin praised the city’s layered defense system for successfully repelling the drone attack.
Meanwhile, Russia continues to advance in eastern Ukraine and defends against Ukrainian incursions into regions like Kursk.
As the war intensifies, both sides are increasingly testing each other’s defenses, signaling that the conflict is far from over.
