Two Men Charged with Fraud After Allegedly Claiming Over $200,000 in False Compensation

Over $200,000 in Fraudulent SARO Reports Uncovered

Two men have been charged for allegedly filing multiple false reports under the Sexual Assault Reporting Operation (SARO) to fraudulently receive over $218,000 in compensation from the NSW Government. The arrests followed an investigation by the Financial Crimes Squad’s Strike Force Avranches, which was launched in August 2024 to probe suspicious financial claims.

During the investigation, detectives discovered that the two men, aged 37 and 30, had created multiple bank accounts to submit false victim compensation claims. Both men were arrested on October 21, 2024, at a motel in Lidcombe and taken to Auburn Police Station.

The older man faces 25 charges for using identity information to commit offenses, 19 counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception, and one charge related to dealing with the proceeds of crime. The younger man has been charged with dealing with proceeds of crime and other related offenses.

Both men were refused bail and will appear in Burwood Local Court on October 22, 2024. Investigations under Strike Force Avranches are ongoing.
