Violent Attack on Police Officers Leads to Multiple Charges
Two men were arrested in Darwin after allegedly assaulting police officers and threatening them with weapons at the Nightcliff foreshore. Around 2:40 p.m., two officers from the Territory Safety Division (TSD) saw a group drinking and arguing in public.
After the officers identified themselves and asked the group to dispose of their alcohol, two men became aggressive. One suspect allegedly struck an officer, causing a facial injury, while the other reportedly pulled a metal pole from the ground and used it to threaten the officers.
A bystander intervened, helping the officers until backup arrived. The suspects allegedly threw the metal pole at one officer before fleeing. Additional TSD officers arrived, and after a brief foot chase, the two men, aged 20 and 22, were arrested. Both men face multiple charges, including assaulting police, using an offensive weapon, and public drinking.
Acting Senior Sergeant Alexander Noonan condemned the assault on police, emphasizing the officers’ role in protecting the community. He also praised the bystander for courageously stepping in to assist the officers during the incident.
