Tiger Attack at Dreamworld: Handler Hospitalized

Incident Raises Concerns About Safety

An experienced animal handler at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast has been hospitalized after being bitten by a tiger. The 47-year-old woman sustained serious lacerations and puncture wounds to her arm and shoulder.

She was treated by first aid staff at the theme park and later transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in stable condition.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m., but details on how it happened remain unclear. The handler, a senior staff member, was well-trained, and the park’s emergency response was swift. Dreamworld stated that this was a rare and isolated event and promised a thorough review.

Kelley Edwards, a union representative, expressed shock at the incident, emphasizing the risks faced by animal handlers. She called for Dreamworld to adopt a no-contact policy with its tigers to reduce the risk of injury.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland has sent inspectors to investigate the circumstances.

Dreamworld, home to nine tigers, continues to focus on the well-being of its staff and will review safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
