The Waste of Blood Donations
Research from the Australian Red Cross reveals that thousands of bags of blood from Australians with hemochromatosis—a genetic condition causing excess iron absorption—are discarded annually instead of being donated.
This condition affects 1 in every 180 to 200 Australians, and its primary treatment involves blood removal. The discarded blood could be vital for patients in need. Redirecting these donations to blood banks could significantly enhance blood supply and save lives across the country.
