While Afghanistan, Iraq, and Sierra Leone are not typical vacation spots for most Australians, a growing trend among wealthy, seasoned travelers is driving interest in these unique and challenging destinations.
David Smyth, a NSW travel agent with Forward Travel, has observed this shift. His company, known for crafting bespoke itineraries to off-the-beaten-path locations, began offering tours to these high-risk areas about a year ago.
This trend was sparked by social media posts showcasing these destinations and Smyth’s subsequent exploration of Iraq, where he found the people to be incredibly welcoming.
Despite the Australian government’s strong travel advisories against these locations(Afg)(Irq) (Sl)—citing security threats and potential dangers—Smyth’s clients, primarily older and well-traveled individuals, are eager to visit and experience these places firsthand.

These travelers are not seeking luxury but are drawn to authenticity and history, willing to stay in modest accommodations to explore remote temples and historical sites.
While travel insurance for such destinations is challenging, Smyth’s company offers specialized coverage through Global Rescue, which provides emergency extraction and medical support.
Dr. David Bierman, a tourism risk management expert, notes that this phenomenon, known as “dark tourism,” attracts those intrigued by destinations with a tumultuous past. For many, the thrill of visiting such places outweighs the risks.
