Tesla’s Optimus Bots Controlled by Humans at Robotaxi Event, According to Robots and Bloomberg

At the recent Robotaxi event, Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots impressed the crowd with dancing, serving drinks, and entertaining attendees. However, according to the robots themselves and a Bloomberg report, the bots were being remotely controlled by humans. A video circulated on X showed one of the robots responding to a question, confirming, “Today, I’m assisted by a human. I’m not yet fully autonomous.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is facing criticism for not disclosing this during the event. Despite the spectacle, Musk didn’t mention that the Optimus bots were under human control, drawing heat for the lack of transparency.

Musk described the Optimus bots as potentially Tesla’s biggest product ever, envisioning them as capable assistants for a variety of tasks, from teaching and babysitting to walking dogs and serving drinks. He suggested that, in the future, these robots could be available for purchase at a price between $20,000 and $30,000.

Despite the controversy, some experts are downplaying the criticism. Analyst George Gianarikas of Canaccord Genuity shrugged off concerns, emphasizing the remarkable progress shown by the robots. “So what!” he stated, noting the advanced dexterity and development of the bots. Gianarikas highlighted Tesla’s strength in areas like manufacturing and battery technology, suggesting the company could become a leader in robotics over time.
