Teens Who Vape Face Higher Risk of Mental Health Issues, Study Finds

The Link Between Vaping and Mental Health

A recent study by the Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use has revealed that teens who vape are more likely to experience poor mental health.

Published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, the study surveyed over 5,000 early adolescents and found that those with severe depression were twice as likely to use e-cigarettes.

The research also highlighted that teens with low well-being were 100% more likely to vape, and those with high stress were 74% more likely.

Understanding the Causes Behind Vaping

The study suggests a correlation between vaping and mental health but does not establish causation. Associate Professor Emily Stockings indicated that the relationship could be “bi-directional”—poor mental health might lead to vaping, and vice versa.

The appeal of vaping to teens struggling with mental health issues is amplified by clever marketing, colorful packaging, and the addictive nature of nicotine, which provides a quick hit of dopamine—a feel-good hormone.

Addressing Vaping and Mental Health Together

Experts believe education alone is insufficient to prevent teen vaping. The ongoing trial in Australia aims to equip teens with coping skills to better manage stress and avoid harmful behaviors like vaping.

Instead of shaming teens, open conversations about their feelings and educating them on brain development could be more effective in reducing vaping.
