Judge Faces Sentencing and Resignation After Assault Charges
Tasmanian Supreme Court Justice Gregory Geason, convicted of assaulting and emotionally abusing his former partner, is set to resign. In October, Geason was found guilty of assault and intimidation. The court heard that he grabbed, shook, and pushed the woman, resulting in bruising and a concussion.
Additionally, Geason monitored her movements and displayed verbally aggressive, jealous behavior. Since his December arrest, he has been on paid leave, with a move to suspend him blocked over constitutional issues.
Geason, who became a Supreme Court justice in 2017, announced plans to resign, acknowledging he no longer holds the moral authority to serve. His lawyer highlighted the total destruction of his public and professional life.
The woman, who spent months in the hospital and remains vigilant with security measures, shared her traumatic experience. Prosecutors suggest a jail sentence may be appropriate for Geason, who also faces sentencing in New South Wales for breaching a protective order.
