Tasmanian Maternity Ward Faces Critical Staffing Shortages

Mothers Share Struggles in Understaffed Hospital Ward

Mothers at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) in Tasmania are raising concerns about severe staffing shortages in the maternity ward, affecting their safety and care.

Erin McGinn, one of the patients, described long waits and inadequate assistance during labor due to the shortage of midwives. She waited hours for pain relief and help with basic tasks, which caused distress and complications with breastfeeding.

Midwives at the RHH have also spoken out about working in desperate conditions, often caring for many mothers and babies at once. The overwhelming workload has led to fears of compromising patient safety.

One midwife even admitted that she felt she could have “killed someone” during a recent shift due to exhaustion and understaffing.

Health Minister Guy Barnett has announced a rapid investigation into these issues, focusing on safe rostering practices and patient care. The government also plans a recruitment drive to increase staff numbers in the coming year.

Despite reassurances, the mothers and midwives remain concerned about the immediate impact on care and safety at the hospital.
