Quick Response Ensures Safety for All
On October 24, 2024, the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) and Northern Territory Police (NTP) responded swiftly to an emergency landing at Nhulunbuy Airport. The incident occurred around 3:40 PM when a light aircraft, carrying three occupants, encountered landing gear issues while en route to Galiwinku.
The aircraft was diverted to Nhulunbuy, prompting emergency services to mobilize. At 4:35 PM, eight NTFRS personnel arrived with one fire truck and two grassfire units, accompanied by NTP and St John Ambulance staff.

Fortunately, the aircraft made an emergency landing without its front landing gear. All occupants disembarked safely and reported no injuries. NTFRS crews secured the scene and removed the aircraft from the runway.
The cause of the landing gear malfunction is still under investigation. Acting Chief Fire Officer Stephen Sewell praised the coordinated efforts of all emergency services, emphasizing the positive outcome and the quick response that ensured everyone’s safety.
