NT Police Urge Cyber Security Awareness Amid Rising Online Threats
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and Northern Territory Police are urging residents to prioritize online safety. Simple steps like enabling multi-factor authentication, updating devices, and using strong, unique passwords can reduce the risk of falling victim to cybercrime.
Senior Constable Nadine Caulfield from the NT Cyber Crime Investigations Unit stresses the effectiveness of these tools in preventing identity theft and financial loss. Last year, 39 Australians fell victim to an online fraud linked to a Northern Territory syndicate, resulting in two arrests. Investigations indicate up to 200 more victims may have been affected. Reporting cybercrimes, even without financial loss, is crucial for police to take action.
To raise awareness, free Cyber Safety sessions will be held for seniors and businesses. These sessions are led by the NT Government in partnership with the Council of Aging NT.
