Lack of Government Support and Project Delays
Former TT Line chairman, Mike Grainger, has spoken out about his resignation amidst the ongoing saga surrounding the delayed construction of two new Spirit of Tasmania ferries and their Devonport port infrastructure. After 11 years at the helm, Grainger left in August, stating he was forced out after the government lost confidence in him.
The project, which now faces significant delays, is largely due to the unfinished port infrastructure, with Berth 3 being the primary issue. Grainger expressed concerns that the government’s inaction contributed to these delays, claiming that TT Line had warned former Infrastructure Minister Michael Ferguson for years. Ferguson allegedly dismissed these concerns, leading to mounting problems.
The Tasmanian government is considering upgrading the berth used by the existing ferries as a temporary solution, but safety concerns remain high due to previous incidents. If no viable option is found, the new ferries could be stored overseas until the port is ready.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff will address the inquiry next month, with a focus on getting the new ferries operational as soon as possible.
