South Australia’s Mobile Phone Detection Cameras: A Wake-Up Call for Drivers

Stricter Measures and Increased Fines Highlight Dangers of Distracted Driving

In a bid to curb distracted driving, South Australia has introduced mobile phone detection cameras, resulting in 2,544 fines during the first week of operation from September 19 to September 25, 2024. Following a three-month grace period, the new data indicates a slight improvement in driver behavior, yet a worrying number of individuals continue to risk their safety. Fines for using mobile phones while driving amount to $556, plus a $102 levy for victims of crime, along with three demerit points.

Data reviewed by a trained SAPOL adjudicator showed that out of 2,604 potential incidents, 97.7% led to expiation notices, with 405 issued on the very first day. Superintendent Darren Fielke of the SAPOL Traffic Services Branch highlighted the ongoing issue, stating that some drivers still “flirt with death” by using their phones while driving. Notably, certain offenders were detected multiple times, and at least three individuals are expected to lose their licenses due to repeated offenses.

In 2024, distraction has played a significant role in 2,101 casualty collisions, resulting in 23 fatalities and 221 serious injuries. Mobile phone detection cameras are currently positioned in five high-risk areas, covering 13 lanes and equipped with warning signs. The data reveals that North South Motorway and Regency Park saw the most violations, while Southern Expressway recorded the lowest.

As SAPOL considers adding two more camera locations in 2025, the message to drivers remains clear: leave your phone alone while driving, or face serious consequences. For more information about mobile phone detection cameras, visit Think! Road Safety.
