South Australia’s Bold Move to Curb Teenage Smoking

A Groundbreaking Bill to Create a Smoke-Free Generation

South Australia is on the verge of becoming the first jurisdiction in Australia to prohibit the sale of tobacco and e-cigarette products to individuals born on or after January 1, 2007. Introduced by independent MP Frank Pangallo, the Bill has already passed the Legislative Council and is awaiting review in the House of Assembly.

Despite significant reductions in teenage smoking rates between 1996 and 2023, a concerning rise in e-cigarette use among teens threatens to reverse this progress. Associate Professor Becky Freeman of the University of Sydney noted that increased teenage vaping could lead to higher smoking rates. A recent study found that teens aged 12-17 who had vaped were five times more likely to start smoking than those who hadn’t.

While South Australia’s proposed legislation is a positive step, experts like Dr. Michaela Okninski and Professor Coral Gartner from the University of Queensland argue that a unified national approach is necessary to effectively tackle the issue.
