Allegations of Human Trafficking and Exploitation in Adelaide
A 38-year-old Colombian national living in Kilburn, South Australia, has been charged with debt bondage and servitude offences, following an AFP investigation. Authorities allege the man exploited Venezuelan youth group members he helped migrate to Australia in 2015 and 2016.
Upon their arrival, the accused allegedly confiscated the victims’ passports, controlled their earnings, and forced them into excessive debt repayment under harsh conditions. Reports state that victims endured restricted movement, daily chores, and isolation from family and friends. Allegations include locking victims in cupboards or out of the group home for days.
A search warrant at the man’s Kilburn home led to his arrest on November 14. Investigators seized electronic devices and documentation as evidence. The man faces charges under Australia’s Criminal Code for aggravated debt bondage and servitude, which carry maximum penalties of seven and 20 years’ imprisonment, respectively.
AFP Detective Superintendent Melinda Adam emphasized the seriousness of servitude and debt bondage, highlighting the deprivation of personal freedom and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. Authorities encourage the public to report any signs of slavery-like practices.
