Comprehensive Support for Farming Communities Battling Drought
The South Australian Government has launched an $18 million support package to help farming communities facing the state’s driest season on record. This initiative, informed by drought roundtables and the SA Drought Advisory Group, aims to address the immediate and long-term challenges of drought-affected primary producers.
Key measures include:
- On-Farm Drought Infrastructure Grants: $5 million allocated for rebates of up to 75% (capped at $5,000 excluding GST) for projects aimed at managing drought and improving resilience.
- Donated Fodder Freight Assistance: $2 million to assist charities in transporting fodder to feed livestock.
- Mental Health and Community Support: $1 million for expanded health services through the Rural Financial Counselling Service and the Family and Business Support Program.
- Community Events Program: $100,000 to fund grants up to $5,000 for events promoting social connections and support.
- Mentorship and Counselling: $4.4 million for Family and Business Mentors and Rural Financial Counsellors offering confidential and independent assistance.
- Future Drought Fund Initiatives: $5.5 million towards programs supporting farm business resilience and climate adaptation tools.
This funding underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the resilience of farmers while addressing immediate needs. Farmers are encouraged to access these programs to better navigate the challenges posed by ongoing dry conditions.
