South Australia Strengthens Shark Safety Measures with $500,000 Initiative

Enhanced Safety Measures to Protect Coastal Communities

South Australia has announced a $500,000 package to enhance shark safety along its coastline, developed in partnership with Surf Life Saving SA. The initiative, shaped by community input and the Shark Taskforce, aims to reduce shark interactions and improve safety for residents and visitors.

The funding will support regional communities through measures such as coastal risk assessments, new signage, trauma kits, drones, drone operator training, and school education programs. The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service will also expand to cover aquatic events between Robe and Whyalla, including the Long Cally Swim at Robe. Aerial surveillance will continue for popular metropolitan events like the Brighton Jetty Classic.

Premier Peter Malinauskas emphasized the importance of these measures, which build on the taskforce’s recommendations following recent shark attacks. They include education, early warning systems, and enhanced response tools.

Fixed-wing aerial shark patrols have also resumed for high-risk beaches and will extend to the south Fleurieu Peninsula on weekends and holidays. These comprehensive safety initiatives reflect a commitment to protecting South Australia’s coastal communities and fostering awareness about shark safety.
