Ron Coote Honored as Rugby League’s 14th Immortal

A Legendary Career Recognized

Ron Coote, a pioneering back row forward who dominated the rugby league in the 1960s and 1970s, has been named the 14th rugby league Immortal.

Coote, who won six premierships from nine grand finals, was celebrated for his exceptional contribution to the sport during the NRL Hall of Fame ceremony at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Coote’s illustrious career began with South Sydney, where he won four premierships before making a surprising move to arch-rivals Easts (now Sydney Roosters). Under the legendary coach Jack Gibson, Coote secured two more premierships with the Roosters.

Throughout his career, Coote was a four-time NSWRL Player of the Year, captained the Kangaroos on three occasions, and was honored in rugby league’s Team of the Century in 2008.

Despite being considered for Immortal status since its inception in 1981, Coote had been overlooked until now. The recognition left him emotional, expressing deep gratitude for the impact rugby league has had on his life.

In addition to Coote’s induction, the NRL welcomed 25 new members into the Hall of Fame, including 11 male players, six female players, two coaches, two referees, and notable administrators and broadcasters.
