Queensland Police Charge Fourth Suspect in Tobacco Shop Arson Investigation

Taskforce Masher Targets Organised Crime in Illicit Tobacco Market

A 22-year-old Heathwood man has been charged following an arson investigation into attacks on tobacco and vape shops across Queensland. The incident began on August 14, when multiple people allegedly set fire to a Mount Isa CBD shop after dousing it with flammable liquid. Mount Isa detectives, working with Taskforce Masher—a specialized Queensland Police taskforce tackling organized crime in the illicit tobacco trade—linked three teenagers, aged 16 and 17, to the crime. These suspects appeared in court on September 20.

Further inquiries led to the arrest of the 22-year-old suspect, believed to have coordinated the attack. Detective Acting Superintendent David Briese highlighted Taskforce Masher’s mission to combat organized crime in the tobacco market, emphasizing the collaboration with agencies like Queensland Health and interstate police to counter cross-border threats.

Taskforce Masher focuses on preventing violence and property damage associated with illicit tobacco, working statewide to safeguard communities from the growing influence of organized crime in this area.
