Blue Lures Initiative Strengthens Community Bonds and Reduces Youth Offending
Two Queensland Police Service (QPS) officers, Constable Daniel Burton and Police Liaison Officer Chelsea Beardmore, were awarded the QBank Everyday Heroes Award for their efforts in launching the Blue Lures fishing program for at-risk youth in St George. The initiative targets children aged 8 to 17, providing a safe space for them to learn new skills, engage with the community, and build positive relationships with the police.
With around 40 participants per session and more than 250 individual engagements to date, the program has successfully fostered trust and communication between officers and the youth. PLO Beardmore emphasized how the initiative has helped break down barriers, enabling open conversations and mutual respect.
In collaboration with Cunnamulla Aboriginal Corporation for Health and Lifeline Darling Downs, Blue Lures has contributed to a 39% reduction in youth offending in St George compared to 2023. The QBank Everyday Heroes Awards celebrate the efforts of QPS and other public service personnel making a positive impact in their communities.
