Coding Error Leads to Massive Qantas Ticket Discounts
Last Thursday, Qantas accidentally sold first-class round-trip tickets from Australia to the U.S. at an 85% discount due to a coding error. Normally priced at up to 28,000 Australian dollars (around $19,000), around 300 lucky buyers snapped up these tickets for as low as $3,400 before the mistake was corrected.

Instead of canceling these mispriced tickets, Qantas has offered customers a generous alternative. The airline will rebook them in business class at no extra cost, or they can opt for a full refund if they prefer. Business class on this route usually costs about $11,000.
This move comes after a challenging year for Qantas. Last August, the airline was sued by Australian regulators for selling tickets on more than 8,000 flights that had already been canceled, affecting over 86,000 passengers. Qantas later settled the lawsuit, agreeing to pay nearly $80 million.
Qantas’ decision to honor the business class upgrade follows a trend where airlines handle such errors differently. Some airlines, like Cathay Pacific, have honored mispriced deals, while others, such as American Airlines, have chosen not to.
