Prepare for the High-Risk Weather Season in the Northern Territory

Essential Tips for Territorians to Stay Safe This Season

The Northern Territory Emergency Service (NTES) is calling on all Territorians to prepare for the High-Risk Weather Season, which runs from October to April. This period marks the Territory’s peak time for heatwaves, severe thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, flooding, and bushfires, particularly in the southern regions. Acting Commissioner Fleur O’Connor emphasizes that preparation is vital for safety during this season.

Territorians are encouraged to take simple steps to safeguard their homes and families, including clearing gutters, securing outdoor items, and developing an emergency plan. These actions can significantly impact safety during a crisis. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has also noted that significant rainfall is expected earlier than usual this year, with September recording above-average precipitation across much of the Territory.

Shenagh Gamble, NT Manager of Hazard Preparedness and Response, mentioned that while the risk of tropical cyclones is predicted to be average, just one storm can drastically affect communities. To stay informed, residents should download the BoM app and enable push notifications for location-specific warnings.

Additionally, Margaret Pratten, Head of Operations at TIO, highlights the importance of preparedness through their free SMS weather alerts. These alerts, available to all Territorians, provide real-time information about severe weather, allowing individuals to act swiftly to protect their homes and families.

To ensure safety during the High-Risk Weather Season, NTES urges all residents to review their emergency kits, stay informed about weather updates, and follow safety advice throughout the season.
