A 37-year-old man has been charged with arson following a fire at a unit on Smithfield Road in Freshwater during the early hours of Sunday, November 3. Emergency services arrived around 1:15 am to find the building extensively damaged by flames. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, though the suspect was treated for smoke inhalation at Cairns Hospital.
Police secured the area as a crime scene, and investigations are ongoing. The man remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today, November 4.
