Police Charge Over 9,500 Drivers in Queensland Road Safety Blitz

Operation Spring Break Targets Dangerous Driving

Queensland Police Service (QPS) charged 9,584 people during the recent Operation Spring Break road safety blitz. Running from September 14 to September 29, the operation aimed to curb dangerous driving during the school holiday period. Police conducted over 40,000 Roadside Breath Tests (RBTs) and 2,265 Roadside Drug Tests (RDTs), resulting in 446 drink-driving and 417 drug-driving charges. Additionally, 3,606 motorists were fined for speeding, and 126 for seat belt violations.

Acting Chief Superintendent Garrath Channells stressed that while most drivers follow the rules, a dangerous minority put others at risk. The operation’s results included a case where police intercepted a speeding vehicle with an unrestrained child and a driver with a suspended license. The driver was charged with three offenses.

As students return to school, the QPS reminds drivers that school speed zones are back in place to ensure children’s safety. Police will continue patrolling school zones to target speeding, distracted driving, and other traffic offenses. The focus on road safety remains a top priority, as Queensland’s road fatality count continues to rise, with 212 deaths as of September 29.
