Perth Man Sentenced to Six Years for Attempting to Possess Heroin Hidden in Mascara

Illicit Drug Smuggling Uncovered in Air Cargo Consignment

A 31-year-old man has been sentenced to over six years in prison by the Perth District Court for attempting to possess heroin concealed inside boxes of mascara. The sentence, handed down on 8 October 2024, follows his conviction in June 2024. His term includes a non-parole period of three years and seven months.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) arrested the man in August 2021 after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers discovered 329 grams of powder hidden inside mascara tubes and envelopes in a cargo shipment from South Africa. Forensic testing revealed that 116.8 grams of the powder was pure heroin, with a street value of approximately $203,000 if sold in ounces.

On 6 August 2021, the AFP monitored the delivery of the drug-laden package to a residence in Balga. The man, riding an e-scooter, collected the package and took a photo of it at a nearby vacant property. When he spotted someone he believed to be a police officer, he abandoned the package and attempted to flee. He was arrested shortly after.

The man was charged with attempting to possess a marketable quantity of heroin, a crime under the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth). AFP Detective Inspector Andrea Coleman emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts with ABF and other agencies to dismantle drug trafficking operations that threaten the Australian community.
