Police Clamp Down on Harbour Protests with Over 170 Arrests
This weekend, police arrested 170 people for disrupting operations and ignoring marine safety directions at the Port of Newcastle. On Saturday, three individuals faced charges for failing to comply with safety directions. The situation escalated on Sunday morning when a large group entered the shipping channel, posing severe safety risks and causing significant disruptions.
Authorities charged 156 adults and 14 youths, including 138 with disrupting a major facility and 32 for safety violations. Two individuals were denied bail and will appear in court. During the arrests, 34 people were retrieved from the water, and ten needed assistance to return to shore. A police officer suffered a fractured ankle.
Additionally, several traffic infringements and five unrelated charges were recorded. Despite the disruptions, the harbour maintained operations, with 31 shipping movements over the weekend.
NSW Police emphasized support for peaceful assembly but reiterated zero tolerance for unlawful or dangerous behavior. The ongoing operation ensures public safety while safeguarding essential port activities.
