Protesters Challenge Peter Dutton’s Nuclear Proposal
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton faced anti-nuclear protests during his visit to Collie, where he discussed plans to replace aging coal-fired power stations with a nuclear plant. Dutton held a closed-door meeting with local councilors, addressing concerns about safety, waste disposal, and job creation.
He emphasized that the nuclear plant would bring thousands of jobs and provide a zero-emissions energy source. However, state officials criticized Dutton for not consulting the broader community, accusing him of sneaking into the town without proper discussion.
Additionally, Dutton announced plans to scrap a proposed offshore wind farm in the region, citing community backlash and the failure of similar projects worldwide. The state government remains committed to thorough assessments of such projects despite concerns.
