Operation Luminous: Gold Coast Police Boost Community Safety with High-Visibility Presence

Gold Coast Police Crack Down on Knife Possession with Operation Luminous

Gold Coast Police recently launched Operation Luminous on October 24, focusing on public safety and proactive community engagement at transport hubs and shopping centers across the district. The operation included 110 handheld scanning checks, 92 street inspections, seven full shopping center walk-throughs, and 86 community interactions. As a result, two knives were seized, leading to four charges against two individuals.

A 37-year-old man from Currumbin was arrested near a Southport light rail stop after revealing a knife during a voluntary scan. A search of his belongings uncovered a drug utensil, and he faces multiple charges, including public nuisance and possession of a knife in a public place. He will appear at Southport Magistrates Court on November 21.

Additionally, a 17-year-old male from Currumbin Waters handed over a knife during a scan at a Gold Coast shopping center and was charged with possession of a knife in a public area. His case is scheduled for October 30 at Southport Children’s Court.

Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles highlighted the success of the operation in preventing potential incidents. “By maintaining a strong police presence, we could intervene early, removing dangerous items like knives from our community,” he said, referencing the effectiveness of “Jack’s Law” in these operations.
