Operation Labour Day 2024: Police to Target Dangerous Driving

Ensuring Road Safety Over the Long Weekend

As the Labour Day long weekend approaches, police in New South Wales (NSW) are gearing up for Operation Labour Day 2024, running from 12:01 AM on Friday, October 4, until 11:59 PM on Monday, October 7. This operation aims to enhance road safety by cracking down on dangerous driving behaviors, including drink and drug driving, speeding, mobile phone use, fatigue, and seat belt violations. During this period, double demerits will apply to all traffic offences.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner David Driver, emphasizes the importance of safe driving practices. With 254 lives lost on NSW roads this year, the focus is on ensuring that every road user reaches their destination safely. Motorists are urged to plan their trips, take breaks during long journeys, and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Ralston Fernandes, Director of Road Safety at Transport for NSW, warns against complacency regarding road safety. He encourages all drivers to adhere strictly to road rules, as one moment of distraction can have dire consequences. By following these guidelines, everyone can contribute to making roads safer during this long weekend.
