Ongoing Investigation Uncovers Serious Crimes Tied to Illicit Tobacco
Police in South Australia are leading Operation Eclipse to tackle the growing criminal activities associated with the illicit tobacco trade. Since May, authorities have been focusing on serious offenses like arson, assaults, and money laundering. Detective Superintendent Shane Addison confirmed that the operation is working closely with Victoria Police and other agencies to disrupt criminal networks involved in the trade.
Seven arson attacks have been linked to the illicit tobacco industry, with incidents involving vehicles, restaurants, and tobacco retailers. Along with these, assaults and standover tactics have also been identified. Two arrests have been made so far, related to money laundering and criminal trespassing, with detectives seizing large sums of cash.
Detectives have also identified 15 persons of interest as part of their investigation. Operation Eclipse continues to collaborate with CBS Tobacco Investigations, the body responsible for regulating tobacco in South Australia.
