Major Crackdown Leads to 19 Arrests and 225 Charges
Sunshine Coast police have concluded Operation Cornmeal, resulting in the arrest of 19 young people facing a staggering 225 charges. This initiative, led by the Child Protection Investigation Unit (CPIU), aimed to identify and apprehend a group of repeat offenders linked to a rise in break-ins and stolen vehicles reported during August and September.
Throughout September, police pinpointed and located these young offenders, aged 13 to 17. The charges against them included serious offenses such as common assault, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing, burglary, trespassing, willful damage, and obstructing police. Notably, a 14-year-old girl from Baringa faces 44 charges, including unlawful vehicle use and burglary. She is set to appear in the Maroochydore Children’s Court on October 30. Similarly, a 15-year-old boy from Nambour has been charged with 17 offenses and will appear in court on October 23.
Detective Inspector Chris Toohey emphasized the seriousness of recidivist youth offending and praised the CPIU for their hard work in improving community safety. He noted that Operation Cornmeal has effectively reduced high-level crimes that harm the community. Additionally, the Sunshine Coast Youth Co-Responder Team has engaged with 13 of the arrested individuals to provide ongoing support and education, aiming to prevent future offenses.
The new Youth Engagement Hub will focus on working with these young offenders, their families, and educational institutions to tackle the underlying causes of youth crime. This holistic approach reflects a commitment to break the cycle of reoffending and foster a safer community for all Sunshine Coast residents.
