Hot Temperatures and Fierce Winds Threaten Sydney and Surrounding Areas
Residents of Sydney, the Illawarra, and southwest NSW are bracing for increased fire dangers as high temperatures and strong winds continue into next week.
After a brief relief from the winds on Friday, conditions are expected to worsen over the weekend, with fire threats predicted to peak on Monday.
NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Inspector Ben Shepherd warned of a possible repeat of Wednesday’s conditions, which saw a grass fire dangerously close to homes in Sydney’s southwest.

Over 90 fires were tackled across the state on Friday, with nearly 1,000 emergency calls received.
Fire crews are currently battling a blaze near Culburra Beach, southeast of Nowra, as winds push the fire in an easterly direction.
Although there was a temporary easing of conditions, the fire risk remains high throughout the weekend and could escalate on Monday. As a result, planned hazard reduction burns have been postponed until after Monday.
Inspector Shepherd urged residents to prepare for the hot summer ahead by cleaning gutters, trimming branches, mowing lawns, and ensuring access to hoses.
He emphasized that fire safety is a shared responsibility, calling for collective action to reduce risks.
