NSW Health Urges Caution During Upcoming Heatwave

Tips for Staying Safe in Heatwave Conditions

NSW Health has issued a warning ahead of forecasted heatwave conditions, urging residents to take precautions as temperatures are set to exceed 30 degrees in parts of the state.

Dr. Stephen Conaty, Director of Environmental Health, highlighted the risks of heat-related illnesses, which can become life-threatening. Symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and cramps. Prompt action to cool down and hydrate is essential to prevent complications.

To stay safe during extreme heat:

  • Close blinds and curtains early to block heat from entering homes.
  • Stay indoors during peak heat hours and keep hydrated by carrying water.
  • Outdoor workers should wear hats, take breaks, and drink plenty of fluids.

Dr. Conaty emphasized the importance of checking on vulnerable individuals, including children and the elderly, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. If symptoms arise, move to a cooler area, use fans or air conditioning, take a cool shower, and drink water.

By taking these precautions, communities can reduce the risk of heat-related health emergencies during the heatwave.
