Tough Measures to Combat Alcohol-Related Issues in Darwin
The Northern Territory government plans to implement new laws to address public drinking, allowing police to arrest and fine nuisance drinkers up to $925. This decision comes as part of a crime crackdown initiated by the newly elected Country Liberal Party government. Previously, police could only confiscate alcohol, but the new laws will empower them to search for outstanding warrants and enforce domestic violence orders.
However, the government faces backlash for abolishing the mandatory minimum floor price for alcohol, which some experts argue has been effective in reducing alcohol-related harm. Chief Minister rejects these claims, urging critics to consider the current circumstances.
Alongside the public drinking laws, Parliament will also discuss lowering the age of criminal responsibility from 12 to 10 and enhancing bail conditions. The new measures reflect the government’s commitment to improving public safety and addressing the ongoing alcohol-related challenges in the region.
