Murringo Man Arrested for Alleged Illegal Firearm Manufacturing and Import

NSW Police and ABF Halt Dangerous Firearm Manufacturing Operation

A Murringo man is set to remain in custody after facing charges related to the alleged possession and importation of firearm parts intended for the illegal manufacture of firearms.

The investigation began in August 2024, when Australian Border Force (ABF) officers noticed the 54-year-old man purchasing firearm-related items online, including rifling buttons and bullet molds. These items are often used for privately manufacturing firearms.

Working alongside the NSW Police Force, ABF executed a search warrant on October 29 at a rural property in Murringo. Authorities seized approximately 80 firearms, including pistols, shotguns, rifles, and manufacturing instructions, along with replica firearms and additional weapons like a crossbow. Police also uncovered a police uniform and ammunition without a proper license.

The man faces three federal charges related to importing prohibited goods, each carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. He also faces eight state charges, including possession of unlicensed firearms and unauthorized weapons manufacturing. After being denied bail, the man is set to appear in Tumut Local Court on November 13.

ABF Superintendent Brett Totten commended the swift collaboration with NSW Police, stressing that homemade firearms are a significant risk to public safety. NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar reinforced the commitment to preventing illegal weapons from endangering the community.
