Siege in Albury Leads to Multiple Charges Against 34-Year-Old Man
A 34-year-old man has been charged with various firearms, drug, and assault offences following a tense siege in Albury. On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, police from the Murray River Police District attempted to stop the man in Lavington. He allegedly produced a firearm and pointed it at officers before fleeing toward Woomera Avenue. After allegedly pointing the weapon at additional officers, the man forcibly entered a home on Wagga Road, where the occupant fled.
A police operation involving negotiators and tactical teams was launched, and later that evening, the man exited the house without incident. Paramedics treated him at the scene for a back injury, and he was taken to Albury Base Hospital. Inside the home, police reportedly found an unloaded sawn-off rifle and a knife, which were seized for forensic examination.
The man was released from the hospital the following day and taken into custody at Albury Police Station. He now faces several serious charges, including using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, possessing an unregistered firearm in a public place, and possessing a prohibited drug. The man was refused bail and is scheduled to appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court on October 19, 2024.
