Man Charged with Camper’s Murder in Montana Initially Reported as Bear Attack

Investigators Uncover Shocking Details Behind Camper’s Death

A Montana camping trip turned tragic when Dustin Kjersem, 35, was found dead on October 12. Initially believed to be the victim of a bear attack, Kjersem’s death was later determined to be a murder after no bear was found nearby. His girlfriend and a friend discovered his body at a campsite near Big Sky, Montana, sparking a search for clues.

Following investigation by the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, authorities arrested 41-year-old Daren Abbey for Kjersem’s murder. Abbey had reportedly planned to camp in the same area and arrived to find Kjersem already at the site.

According to Sheriff Dan Springer, Kjersem welcomed Abbey, offering him a beer. However, at some point, Abbey allegedly attacked Kjersem with a piece of wood, a screwdriver, and an axe.

DNA evidence from a beer can left at the site matched Abbey’s, leading to his arrest in Butte, Montana. Abbey is now held on $2.2 million bail. Authorities believe the attack was random, with no prior connection between Abbey and Kjersem.
