Police Crack Down on Copper Wire Thefts Across Southeast Queensland
A 46-year-old Jones Hill man has been charged with 25 offences after an investigation into copper wire thefts across southeast Queensland. Detectives from Gympie’s Criminal Investigation Branch and Child Protection Investigation Unit linked him to over 18 thefts or damages to copper cables reported between June and November 2024.
A search warrant executed on November 11 at a Pie Creek property uncovered approximately 30kg of copper wiring, damaged insulation, and drug paraphernalia. The accused faces 12 counts of wilful damage, nine counts of stealing, and other charges, including dangerous operation of a vehicle. He remains in custody, with a court appearance scheduled for December 9 at Gympie Magistrates Court.
Detective Acting Inspector Melonie Geck highlighted the complexity of the investigation, which spanned areas such as Gympie, the Sunshine Coast, and Indooroopilly. Geck emphasized the commitment of law enforcement to track and prosecute property offenders despite their creative attempts to evade capture.
This case serves as a reminder of the vigilance and thoroughness of police efforts to tackle property crimes and hold offenders accountable.
