Theft of War Memorial Plaques Leads to Police Chase and Arrest in Fairfield

Police Recover Stolen Memorial Plaques After Crash Incident

A 34-year-old man has been charged after allegedly stealing brass memorial plaques and other items from war memorials in Fairfield, New South Wales. Early on November 8, 2024, police noticed a Toyota sedan with partially concealed plates on The Horsley Drive in Fairfield and attempted to stop the vehicle. When the driver failed to pull over, a police pursuit ensued.

The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into a shop at Station Street and The Boulevarde, igniting a fire. Fire crews extinguished the blaze, and the driver was pulled from the vehicle and transported to Liverpool Hospital under police guard with injuries to his foot and leg.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led police to discover a range of allegedly stolen items, including brass memorial plaques, war memorabilia, and honor boards. These items were seized for forensic analysis, with efforts underway to return them to their original locations in Fairfield.

The man faces 18 charges, including larceny, defacing protected places, driving recklessly, possession of a prohibited weapon, and possessing stolen goods. He was refused bail and is scheduled for a bedside hearing at Parramatta Local Court on November 9, 2024.
