Intoxicated Man Arrested After Attempted Bus Hijacking

An Adelaide man has been arrested after a dramatic incident at a bus depot on Franklin Street early this morning, October 12. At around 5:45 a.m., police responded to reports of an intoxicated man entering a chartered coach filled with 26 passengers and attempting to drive it away.

When officers arrived, the man was in the driver’s seat, visibly agitated, and refused to leave the bus. Police efforts to remove him escalated when he began punching two officers in the head. Capsicum spray was initially used but proved ineffective, as the man continued to try to drive the bus.

Additional officers arrived on the scene to assist, and a third officer was also assaulted, suffering a split lip from being kicked. A police dog, PD Edge, was called in to aid the removal, but both the dog and its handler were attacked.

A taser was deployed, but the man remained in control of the bus. A second attempt with capsicum spray finally subdued him, and he was arrested. The 28-year-old man was taken to a hospital for medical assessment before being charged with four counts of assaulting a prescribed emergency worker and illegal use of a motor vehicle.

Two police officers were hospitalized with injuries, but none of the passengers were harmed during the incident.
