Two Arrests Following Record Drug Importations
In a significant operation, authorities seized nearly 50kg of illicit drugs at Sydney Airport over a 48-hour period, resulting in the arrest of two foreign nationals. A Canadian-Ecuadorian man, 41, was charged after allegedly attempting to import six kilograms of cocaine concealed in his underpants.
Upon his arrival on September 21, 2024, Australian Border Force (ABF) officers noted discrepancies in his visa application and found a package secured with electrical tape containing cocaine.

Two days later, a 23-year-old American was arrested for importing 21kg of cocaine and 21kg of methamphetamine concealed in his luggage. ABF officers discovered 28 suspicious packages during a routine inspection of his suitcases, leading to the identification of the controlled substances.
Both individuals face serious charges under the Criminal Code, with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Authorities emphasized the dangers posed by illicit drugs to the Australian community and the ongoing efforts to prevent drug smuggling at airports.
Acting Sydney Airport Police Commander Dom Stephenson highlighted the importance of rigorous border protection, while ABF officials noted the risks young travelers face when exploited by criminal syndicates.
