World number one tennis star Jannik Sinner has recently been at the center of a doping controversy, despite a clean slate for future competitions. Just hours after winning the Cincinnati Open, Sinner disclosed that he tested positive for the banned steroid Clostebol earlier this year.
Sinner’s positive tests were for extremely low levels of Clostebol—less than a billionth of a gram. The initial positive result occurred during the Indian Wells Masters on March 10, with a follow-up test a week later also showing trace amounts.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) conducted an investigation and concluded that Sinner was inadvertently exposed to the steroid.
According to the ITIA, the contamination came from a product purchased by Sinner’s fitness trainer and used by his physiotherapist to treat a minor injury. Sinner was unaware of the substance, and the physiotherapist did not know the product contained Clostebol.
Given the circumstances, the ITIA has cleared Sinner of intentional wrongdoing and has determined that he will not face a ban.
